Always remember that you have to let your puppy know that your serious about stopping this bad puppy habit, which ever process or dog training skill you use.

Technique A.

This technique is a favourite amoung dog owners, and is a good one to start out with. The basic idea behind this to do some guilt therapy on your puppy - make your puppy think that biting you means you are being hurt! Ouwch!! You see when puppies are naturally playing and biting themselves in a group, the behaviour only stops when one of the puppies yelps out when bitten. So this dog training technique actually replicates the puppies natural learning process, but from a human instead.

Even if it doesn’t actually hurt that much, the point is you have to make it look like it really hurt and show that to your puppy - a bit of acting might come in handy here: say loudly Ouuch! or Arrrhhhh! and then pull away quickly and stop all affection and play for a bit of a while. If this is repeated long enough your puppy will naturally learn that if s(he) bites a human, then his/her play friend is not happy and goes away.

Technique B.

As long as you identify the puppy biting problem pretty early on in his/her life, it will usually be quite easy to stop the puppy biting from happening. This technique involves redirecting the biting from you the human to some other object - e.g. from your hands to a chew toy or a bone. When your puppy starts to bite your hand, you say a stern “No!” and then quickly replace your hand with the bone or chewable toy. If the puppy is very young this simple skill maybe all thats needed to change and break the habit.
